Occasionally we have wethers (non-breeding males) for sale as pets or livestock (lambs, goats) guards. As a pet they can be very friendly. They are curious animals who can can be taught to feed from your hand and can be halter trained. Alpacas can be an excellent sheep guard against foxes, but you must choose the right alpaca - some are more protective of "their herd" than others. They require a little annual maintenance - sheering must be done before summer and vitamin injections are needed a couple of times a year. It isn't adviseable to keep alpacas alone, so you'll need at least two. They are not suitable as an urban pet but perfect for small acreage.
